Supreme Court confirms past verdict, sacks Hembe from House of Reps.

The Supreme Court has confirmed its earlier verdict that it ousted Congresswoman Herman Hembe, a representative of the Vandeikiya / Konshisha constituency of the Benue state of the House of Representatives. The apex court had declared Mrs. Dorathy Mato winner of the APC party ticket for the electorate and asked Hembe to vacate her seat in the lower house. The court also demanded that the ousted legislator return all the money he had earned in the House of Representatives since 2015. But the legislature again approached the Supreme Court to refer the case to a lower court for his retrial. However, Hembe's request was denied when the court validated his earlier decision to dismiss him from the House of Representatives, reports from the Times.

The court also awarded the sum of N1million against Mr. Hembe in favor of Dorathy Mato, the defendant. Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has accepted an invitation from Senate President Bukola Saraki to visit the National Assembly to discuss matters of public interest. Timothy Adewale, deputy director of SERAP, said the group's representatives will meet on Thursday, September 21 to invite the Senate president to visit the Assembly, reports from the Times. He revealed that Thursday's meeting that has been scheduled for 1pm at the National Assembly Complex follows SERAP's request to Saraki to urgently explain to Nigerians whether it is true that a Nigerian senator gets N29 million in monthly pay, and over N3 billion a year.
